Deciding whether you need to go to an ER or an urgent care can be a tough decision. At an urgent care you will spend less time and much less money for your appointment, but some illnesses are too serious to be addressed adequately outside of an ER. An ER is certainly prepared to treat serious illness and injuries, but it is expensive! Even with traditional insurance an ER visit can cost thousands. The average out of pocket cost for an ER visit in Utah is $ 3,219.
Sincerely, it is a challenging question. Clinicians train for years to understand the complexities of this decision. Here is my advice, ask yourself: “Am I worried about dying from this?” If the answer is yes, head to the ER. An ER is a place for true emergencies. We’re talking fear of loss of life or limb. If this is the case, it’s best to get the care needed and deal with the hefty bill later. Otherwise go to an urgent care, have their provider lend some counsel.
At the urgent care, being able to handle your specific problem can depend on the equipment available and the skills of the provider and staff on at that moment. They might not even take you back to a patient room- hearing your symptoms alone may trigger the red flashing lights and they will hurry you on to the higher level of care that an ER can provide. More likely, they will treat you and send you on your way. Prepared with the information catered to you about what to watch for if things get worse and when to return to the urgent care or head straight to the ER.
Lastly, here is a helpful mnemonic that details several illnesses and injuries and whether they are urgent care or ER worthy. This list is a good general guide for many situations. However, after reviewing the list if you’re still lost go to an urgent care and get their opinion.
